Helen Zille’s long awaited autobiography is one of the most fascinating political stories of our timeZille takes the reader back to her humble family origins her struggle with anorexia as a young woman her early career as a journalist for the Rand Daily Mail and her involvement with the End Conscription Campaign and the Black Sash She documents her early days in the Democratic Party and the Democratic Alliance at a time w. A very well written autobiography that is a real page turner The bulk of the book focuses on the post 1994 period and most of the events are around Zille s rise to become Mayor of Cape Town and subseuently party leader and Premier There are interesting behind the scenes accounts of political manoeuvrings betrayals and some juicy details on the botched attempt to make Mamphela Ramphele the DA presidential candidate in 2014 I felt like the last two chapters were pushed out uickly to meet the publishing deadline and is not of the same uality as the rest of the book I expected a lot on the 2016 elections and the saga around the finance ministerOverall this is a great book by the strong wily and often times controversial leader now former of the official opposition in SA Helen Zille has no doubt played a pivotal role in South Africa s new democracy and is the most important figure in opposition politics in South Africa post 1994 without uestion I disagree with many of Zille s views but I have gained new found respect for her after reading her autobiographyHighly recommended especially if you have a keen interest in South African politics
