The duke of Stoke Teversault has well earned his reputation for bloodless calculation Indeed recently widowed Georgina Lark has no idea he’s loved her since before her late husband swept her off her feet Stoke Teversault means to keep it that way The cold and forbidding duke and the blithe and open Georgina could not be less suited in any capacity And yet when. I will forgive Carolyn Jewel so so much because I really do love her style of writing Her books feel historically accurate even though she gets titles wrong sometimes and they balance description emotion and dialogue very well They re well populated with secondary characters and they usually motor along at a nice pace without too much drama This one is no different And boy can she write steam and sex In giving this 35 stars I am being very generous because ultimately parts of this just didn t make sense The central romance doesn t flow well The heroine s character is curiously inconsistent It s not entirely clear why she s unsuitable There s something about her liking food and running and counting trees but ultimately everyone likes her and she s obviously fine The hero is already in love with her but it s not apparent why and they have some history of affection because he came to her after her husband died Yet he keeps her at arms length because reasons even when they start sleeping together I think it was supposed to be an opposites thing she s too unladylike and flaky and he s dark and somber and weighed down by Ducal responsibilities Although sometimes there was also the suggestion it was a class thing It s not articulated well To compound things there were portions of dialogue between them that didn t make sense I think they were supposed to be profound and introspective but honestly I didn t get it As ever with Jewel there s just the sense that if she d gone back and taken another pass at the manuscript it could ve been really goodBut Their attraction is great Their sex is better So for all it s flaws I enjoyed this
