review The Wish Maker

The Wish Maker

A major new international voice debuts with a sweeping story of love friendship and family ties that brings to life the turbulent world of modern PakistanThe unforgettable story of a fatherless boy growing up in a household of outspoken women The Wish Maker is also a tale of sacrifice betrayal and indestructible friendship Zaki Shirazi and his female cousin Samar Api were raised to consider themselves part of the same litter Together they watched American television and memorized dialogue. I d wanted to start reading this book earlier but the goodreads ratings and reviews of it were so negative that I had to think twice before taking it up Now that I ve finally finished reading this novel all I have to say is please do not trust goodreads ratings they re misleading and will keep you from reading good books An average rating of 275 REALLY GOODREADSIts been a while since I read a novel chronicling the events of my own country and hence it was pleasant to read the wish maker This book is set in the bitter sweet 90 s so it brought a fresh wave of nostalgia for all the old times What I found remarkable about the wish maker is how it covered the stories of all the characters from Chotti to Naseem in a way that you make an acuaintance with the most intimate parts of the characters The writing style of the author is intricate there are some passages in the book that I read and had to stare at the wall for a moment or two because of the brilliance with which they were described For me the first 200 pages of the book were the most satisfying to read After that the book loses some of its charm Zaki Shirazi may be a good protagonist but he s an extremely dull charater there s no character development and if there is I failed to see it He s a sidekick to Samar Api who wasn t exactly my favourite character even though she is lively and vivacious I like the way the author has paid attention to detail while writing his characters His portrayal of personalities of his various characters is superbly done As much as I liked the writing style I can t say the same for the story itself The story just goes on There s no real purpose of it It s a coming of age novel so I guess that s exactly whats supposed to happen but I still waited for an event to take place which sadly never happens While reading The Wish Maker I decided to listen to Ali Sethi s songs and oddly enough the experiment went really with the tone of the book Overall I m not unhappy with how this book turned out 4 stars Business English international voice debuts with a sweeping story of love friendship and family ties that brings to life the turbulent world of modern PakistanThe unforgettable story of a fatherless boy growing up Mama Glow is also a tale of sacrifice betrayal and Fire in the Sky indestructible friendship Zaki Shirazi and his female cousin Samar Api were raised to consider themselves part of the same litter Together they watched American television and memorized dialogue. Self It is only after years of separation from Samar that he is forced to confront the true nature of happiness selfhood and commitment to those he loves mostChronicling world changing events that have never been so intimately observed in fiction and brimming with unmistakable warmth and humor The Wish Maker is the powerful account of a family and an era a story that shows how even in the most rapidly shifting circumstances there are bonds that survive the tugs of convention time and histo. Ali Sethi is a supremely untalented writer To say that the book overpromises and undelivers is inaccurate for the book has almost nothing to do with what the synopsis claims All that the book has are the ramblings of this 20 something year old about his childhood memories This book should have never seen the light of day at least not in its current scrambled and unedited formSethi clearly comes from a connected south asian family and pehaps that s all it takes to get a south asian book out and connected to the extent that this boy is now apparently making music in Pakistan I have no doubt he will soon have a music record to show for it as well but I am also as sure that he is as true to his music as he is to his writing
